Characterization of Selected Solid Waste Dumpsites in Owerri Metropolis in Owerri Imo State

Ndubueze O.C, Aguta C.S, Nwogu O.J, and Dike M.N

Abstract

The research aimed to describe specific solid waste dumpsites in Owerri Metropolis. The nature of the municipal solid waste was analyzed based on the makeup of individual waste components in the waste streams, using average mass (kg) and percentage composition by mass of the different parts, measured with an electronic weighing balance. The results were analyzed statistically using SPSS. Findings showed that organic waste made up a total mass of 32.4kg, accounting for 26% of the total waste by mass, while the five (5) inorganic waste components totaled 55.5kg, representing 74% by mass. Among these, vegetables and medical waste were the most prevalent, comprising 12.18% by mass. Vegetable waste had a composition of 5.8% by mass. Paper and textile waste accounted for 3.5% and 6.38%, respectively. Wood waste made up 2.13% by mass. It is suggested that sufficient financial resources, effective waste legislation, ongoing training for staff, and full community involvement in waste management should be promoted. Additionally, formal composting and recycling facilities should be established to improve waste management.
