Evaluation of the Antidiarrheal Effects of Heliotropium Indicum Ethanolic Leaf Extract on Gastrotestinal Motility and Enteropooling in Castor Oil-Induced Diarrheal Rats

Iyanuoluwa Ifeoluwa OJO

Abstract

This research evaluated the antidiarrheal potentials of ethanolic leaves extract of Indian turnsole (Heliotropium indicum) in castor oil-induced diarrheal wistar rats respectively. Qualitative phytochemical screening and HPLC characterization of the ethanolic leaves extract of Heliotropium indicum was carried out. Diarrhoea was induced in Wistar rats with 1 ml of castor oil. The antidiarrheal effect of the ethanolic leaves extract at concentrations of 6.25, 12.50, 25.00, and $50.00~mgKg^{-1}$ body weight was studied against castor oil-induced diarrheal rats. The extract reduced fecal output and frequency of stooling, gastrointestinal transit rate, weight and volume of intestinal enteropooling. The extract has antidiarrheal effects in castor oil induced diarrheal rats in a concentration dependent manner. These results attested to the use of Heliotropium indicum as an antidiarrheal agent in a wide range among traditional medicine practitioners.
