The Impact of Senna tora Leaf Extract on Blood Glucose Levels in Diabetic Albino Rats (A Study on Diabetes Mellitus)
Abstract
This research examined the hypoglycemic effects of Senna tora leaf extract on the blood glucose levels of alloxan-induced diabetic albino rats, emphasizing the management of diabetes mellitus through natural plant-based treatments. Fresh Senna tora leaves were extracted using methanol and administered to twenty albino rats, which were divided into four groups. Groups A and B consisted of diabetic rats treated with 500 mg/kg and 1000 mg/kg body weight of the extract, respectively, while Group C acted as the diabetic control, and Group D served as the non-diabetic control. Diabetes was induced via an intraperitoneal injection of 100 mg/kg body weight of alloxan monohydrate, and blood glucose levels were monitored at intervals using a glucometer. The results indicated a significant reduction in blood glucose levels among the treated rats compared to the diabetic control group. Group B, which received 1000 mg/kg of the extract, demonstrated the most substantial decrease in blood glucose level (17.9%), followed by Group A (12%), suggesting a dose-dependent hypoglycemic effect. These findings imply that the methanolic extract of Senna tora leaves may enhance glucose regulation, potentially by safeguarding pancreatic beta cells or improving insulin function. In conclusion, Senna tora exhibits strong antidiabetic properties and may represent an effective natural alternative for managing type 1 diabetes mellitus. Further investigations into its long-term effects, active phytochemicals, and mechanisms of action are warranted.
