Media Convergence Influence on the Behaviour and Attention Span of Adolescents in Select Secondary Schools in Rivers State
Abstract
The evolution of digital media and the convergence of multiple platforms have profoundly influenced adolescent behaviour and cognitive functioning. This study examined the impact of media convergence on the behaviour and attention span of adolescents in selected secondary schools in Rivers State, Nigeria. Employing a survey research design, data were collected from 330 students across three secondary schools using structured questionnaires and teacher interviews. Findings indicate that 60% of respondents reported high daily exposure to online media, with the majority acknowledging that media use affects focus, reduces study time, and influences classroom behaviour. The results highlight a significant relationship between prolonged media exposure and decreased attention span, increased distractibility, and altered behavioural patterns. The study concludes that while digital media can enhance learning opportunities, excessive exposure poses risks to adolescents’ cognitive development and academic performance. Recommendations include strengthening digital literacy education, implementing screen-time regulations, and promoting balanced media use in schools. The findings provide valuable insights for educators, parents, and policymakers seeking to mitigate the adverse effects of media convergence on adolescents.
