Assessment of Environmental and Health Risks of Urban Flooding

Abstract

Urban flooding poses a critical challenge to cities worldwide, a problem exacerbated by rapid urbanization, inadequate infrastructure, and climate change. This study assesses the associated environmental and health risks, with a specific focus on vulnerable urban communities. A descriptive research design was employed, utilizing a structured questionnaire distributed to 200 respondents selected via the Taro Yamane formula from a target population of 400. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics (frequencies and percentages) to address five research questions, and two hypotheses were tested using the Chi-square test. The findings reveal that urban flooding leads to severe environmental degradation, notably water source contamination (47.5%), significant soil erosion (40%), and ecosystem disruption (42.5%). Public health risks are equally profound, with high incidences of waterborne (45%) and vector-borne diseases (50%) reported, alongside significant mental health impacts (42.5%). Socioeconomically, flooding results in substantial property damage (50%), livelihood loss (45%), and community displacement (42.5%). Key contributing factors identified include heavy rainfall (52.5%), blocked drainage channels (50%), and unplanned urbanization (45%). The study concludes that a holistic approach is imperative, recommending integrated strategies such as improved drainage systems, enforced urban planning regulations, investment in green infrastructure, and the implementation of community-based early warning systems to effectively mitigate flood impacts and enhance urban resilience.
