Influence of Guidance and Counselling Services on Students’ Indiscipline in Public Secondary Schools in Rivers State

Bawo, Cecilia Nsangba, Maxwell D Eremie

Abstract

This study examined the influence of guidance and counselling services on students’ indiscipline in public secondary schools in Rivers State. The study specifically investigated how placement, orientation, and information services influence students’ behavior. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population consisted of 2,911 respondents, including 59 counselling teachers and 2,852 senior secondary school students from four selected local government areas in Rivers State. A sample size of 932 respondents was drawn using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire titled Influence of Guidance and Counselling Services on Students’ Indiscipline Questionnaire (IGCSSIQ), validated by experts and tested for reliability with a Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient of 0.84. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while z-test was used to test the hypotheses at a 0.05 significance level. Findings revealed that placement, orientation, and information services significantly reduce students’ indiscipline by guiding them toward appropriate academic choices, improving their understanding of school rules and promoting responsible behavior. It was concluded that effective guidance and counselling services are vital tools for managing student discipline in schools. The study recommended strengthening counselling units, continuous orientation programs, and improved communication channels to enhance students’ behavioral outcomes.
