Occupational Health Risks and Socioeconomic Dimensions of Solid Waste Scavenging in Potiskum Metropolis, Yobe State, Nigeria

Abstract

Solid waste scavenging provides livelihood for many in Nigeria but exposes scavengers to health hazards and chronic diseases. This study assessed solid waste scavenging and its potential health risks in Potiskum Metropolis, Yobe State. Using a descriptive survey design, 386 respondents were sampled from five wards. Data were collected through simple random and accidental sampling at dumpsites and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Findings revealed that most scavengers were male (97%), largely under 18 years (62%), and earned daily income above ?950 (42%). Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) was low. Major health problems included infectious diseases, respiratory problems, injury, fatigue, and skin infections. Recommendations include PPE promotion, skill acquisition programs, formalization and monitoring of scavenging activities, and health awareness campaigns.
