An Assessment of Naija FM 92.7 Radio Advocacy Campaign on Premarital Genotype Testing on Knowledge, Attitude and Practices in Ogoni Land

Abstract

The study, "An Assessment of Naija FM 92.7 Radio Advocacy Campaign on Premarital Genotype Testing in Ogoni Land," investigates the impact of radio campaigns on promoting premarital genotype testing among the Ogoni people. This health intervention is vital in preventing hereditary diseases such as sickle cell anemia and thalassemia. Despite its significance, many individuals in Ogoni Land lack awareness about the benefits of premarital genotype testing and do not prioritize it in their marriage plans. The study is grounded in three key theories: the Diffusion and Innovation Theory, Agenda Setting Theory, and Multi-Stage Flow Theory. These frameworks guide the assessment of radio campaigns' influence on people's knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding premarital genotype testing. A survey research methodology was employed to collect data from 400 respondents across four Local Government Areas in Ogoni Land.A multi-stage sampling technique ensured representation from diverse communities, providing valuable insights into people's awareness, attitudes, and practices related to premarital genotype testing. The study's findings highlight the need for improved radio campaigns to promote premarital genotype testing effectively. Recommendations include using simple language and cultural sensitivity to reach a wider audience, engaging community leaders, religious figures, and health workers in promoting premarital genotype testing, and implementing educational programs to increase awareness about its benefits. By implementing these strategies, radio campaigns can play a pivotal role in enhancing awareness, attitudes, and practices regarding premarital genotype testing, ultimately contributing to the prevention of hereditary diseases in Ogoni Land.The study's results underscore the importance of tailored approaches to health communication, emphasizing the potential of radio campaigns to influence health behaviors positively.
