Abstract

The present study was conducted to evaluate the toxic effect of permethrin on the female reproductive system of albino rats. A total of 60 sexually mature female albino rats, twelve weeks old, were exposed to 0, 34, 52, and 103 mg/kg body weight.) Permethrin in a Completely Randomized Design for four weeks. The levels of the reproductive hormones assayed in the serum samples were estimated based on the standard principle of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) as described in the ELISA kit leaflets for luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), estrogen, and progesterone. All data were expressed as M ± S.D. Statistical analysis of data was performed on the basis of one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for all experimental groups using SPSS 20 software, and differences were determined using least significant difference (LSD). The probability ? 0.05 was considered significant. The result showed a significant (P<0.05) decrease in body weight gain of rats treated with different concentrations of permethrin compared to the control group. Exposure of female rats to cypermethrin resulted in a significant (P<0.05) decrease in levels of estrogen, FSH, and LH compared to untreated rats. The present study concluded that oral exposure to permethrin has considerable harmful effects on the body in albino rats. The observed toxicities are likely to disrupt reproductive processes, resulting in serious disabilities. The hormonal disruption observed in rats suggests that permethrin exposure disrupted the hypothalamic–pituitary endocrine function, depicting hazardous effects of the permethrin on reproductive processes, particularly the fertility in rats.
