Abstract

This research work was carried out to examine the impact of domestic violence on children in the Idemili Area of Anambra State. Domestic violence is an issue of concern in the Idemili Area. As long as human history has existed, the dysfunctional family has been prominent in interpersonal violence, which affects children. This research work breaks the culture of silence that promotes domestic violence and its impact on children. Analytical data collected for the resolution of the problems associated with domestic violence in the Idemili Area of Anambra State showed that rape, battered wives, sexual harassment, and abuse of housemaids in the hands of their supposed protectors or guidance are increasing daily. Three guided the study. The study employed both primary and secondary research methods to gather data. Findings from the study revealed that high rates of domestic violence are due to cultural factors, social factors, addiction to drugs and alcohol, and low levels of education, among other things. Domestic violence has a tremendous influence on the formation of children. It influences the child's or children's education, as well as their religious, economic, psychological, and social development. However, the findings also revealed that commitment by parents, caregivers, and teachers in carrying out their responsibilities seems to be on the decline. The study further exposes some inherent challenges and abuses faced by children in unsuitable living conditions. Such situations imply that learning institutions should ascertain possible ways of liberating the affected children and educate the parents, caregivers, and teachers on the adverse effects of perpetuating domestic violence. It is, therefore, recommended that the Government should establish and fund counselling centres at the community and Local Government levels and employ professional counsellors to help victims and perpetrators of domestic violence.
