Sociological Examination of Climate Change and its Implications on Rural Livelihoods in Awe Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study provides sociological examination of climate change and its implications on rural livelihoods in Awe Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa state, Nigeria, a region characterized by its agrarian economy and reliance on natural resources. One hundred and twenty (120) respondents were drawn from three (3) purposively selected wards in study area. This study adopted Sustainable Livelihoods Approach (SLA). Closed ended questionnaire was used as the major instrument of data collection while data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistical tools such as tables, frequencies and simple percentages. The finding of this study presented in table 1 reveals that majority (48.3%) of respondents sampled were between the ages of 36 and 45 years. Similarly, 74.2% of the respondents were male and 65.0% were married. Table 1 again reveals that majority of respondents sampled had tertiary education (43.3%) and 49.1% were farmers. Furthermore, the study reveals that 62.4% of the respondents were of the view that deforestation was the major determinant of climate change in the study area, 51.6 % of the respondents were of the view that sociological impact of climate change on agriculture reduces quality and quantity of yields, 63.6 % of the respondents were of the view that climate change causes food insecurity thereby affecting rural dwellers means of livelihoods and finally, result in table 5 clearly reveals that majority of the respondents’ assessment of government policy in mitigating the effects of climate change in the study area representing 97.2% indicated that government policy was not effective. The study recommends institutional support from both government and donor aid agencies to mitigate the impact of climate change. Communities should engage in reforestation by planting trees to maintain abundant grazing lands for livestock thereby ensuring overall food security, employment generation and poverty reduction am
