Innovative Participatory Communication Approaches as Catalysts for Transformative Social Change in Abia State
Abstract
This study examined innovative participatory communication approaches as catalysts for transformative social change in Abia State. The objectives of the study were to: determine the extent to which innovative participatory communication approaches are applied in promoting transformative social change; identify the challenges affecting their effective implementation; and assess their impact on community empowerment and sustainable development in Abia State. The research was anchored on the Participatory Communication Theory and Diffusion of Innovations Theory. The study adopted a descriptive survey design and covered a population of 1,425 participants, which comprised community-based organizations, non-governmental organizations, youth associations, media practitioners, and government communication officers across the 17 Local Government Areas of Abia State. Using Yamane’s formula, a sample size of 285 respondents was selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed with descriptive statistics and a four-point Likert scale. Findings revealed that innovative participatory tools such as community radio, social media, and digital storytelling enhance inclusion, empowerment, and collective problem-solving. However, challenges such as poor internet connectivity, low digital literacy, and inadequate funding hinder effective implementation. The study concluded that strengthening innovative participatory communication with improved infrastructure, training, and supportive policy frameworks can drive sustainable and transformative social change in Abia State.
