Design Strategies to Optimize Artifact Preservation in an Ethnographic Museum

Abstract

This study investigates architectural design strategies for optimizing artifact preservation in ethnographic museums. While these institutions are vital for safeguarding cultural heritage, many faces significant challenges in conservation due to inadequate infrastructure and poor environmental controls. The primary objective of this research is to identify and analyze key architectural design components including thermal massing, natural ventilation, building orientation, regulated daylighting, and spatial planning that contribute to long-term preservation. Through a methodology incorporating a literature review, case study analysis, and interviews with Nigerian museum professionals, the study demonstrates how deliberate architectural choices, sustainable material selection, and collaborative practices can stabilize internal environmental conditions essential for protecting sensitive artifacts. The paper proposes a step-by-step methodological framework to integrate conservation priorities into every phase of museum design and operation. The study concludes that preventive conservation is most effective when passive and active strategies are synergistically integrated, resulting in ethnographic museums that are energy-efficient, culturally meaningful, and fundamentally driven by preservation goals.
