Culture and Girl-Child Education for National Development: A Case Study of North- Central Nigeria

Abstract

This paper examines the issue of culture and girl-child education for national development in Nigeria a focus on North central states. In a country where women are considered as properties for men and objects for their pleasure, discourages the training of the girl-child in school. The paper further examines some hindrances to effective girl-child education which includes biogrammar factors, misunderstanding of the position of religion on education, socio-economic status of parents, socio-cultural factors, low stereotyped status of girls in the society and school and the patriarchal attitude involving domestic division of labour. Primary and secondary data were collected and analyzed. The finding of this paper is grounded in the fact that cultural sentiments and religious beliefs are the main factors responsible for the low level of the girl-child education in North Central Nigeria. For any meaningful and sustainable development to be attained, the girl-child and by extension women that constitute more than half of Nigerian’s population should be given appropriate education and empowerment. The paper posits also the need for effective collaboration and synergy among government and her agencies, interventionist, social agencies and the transitional institutions, for girl-child education for national development.
