A Hybrid Approach Methodology of Evaluating Software Development: A Review

A.A Ibrahim, F.A Ibrahim, S.G Auyo, A Yushau, H.Y Bawa, B Usman, A Garba

Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive review of the hybrid Scrum–Extreme Programming (XP) methodology as an emerging approach to improving software development processes. Agile methodologies such as Scrum and XP have transformed software engineering by promoting flexibility, collaboration, and iterative progress. However, limitations in scalability, code quality, and communication within development teams have prompted the integration of multiple agile frameworks into hybrid models. Drawing from previous studies and theoretical frameworks, this review examines how the hybrid Scrum–XP approach integrates Scrum’s project management structure with XP’s technical excellence to enhance productivity and software quality. The review further explores its potential applicability to academic and small development teams such as those developing the Federal University Dutse (FUD) portal. The findings from the reviewed literature indicate that hybrid Scrum–XP methodologies improve task prioritization, foster collaboration, and ensure higher code maintainability. This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on hybrid Agile practices and provides insights for organizations seeking to optimize software development through methodological integration.
