The Impact of the Russia-Ukraine Conflict on Refugees and International Trade

ThankGod F Lilly-Inia, PhD, Chimezie Chukwuemeka Eze

Abstract

This study examines the impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on Refugees and international trade. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict has triggered a humanitarian crisis and caused major disruptions in global trade. Millions of Ukrainians have been displaced internally and across borders, overwhelming neighbouring countries and creating long-term challenges for refugee resettlement, integration, and international humanitarian support systems. Secondary source of data was deployed for the study; it involves the collection of data from textbooks, journals and seminar papers, among others. The adopted theory for this study is the Realist theory. This study found out that Military operations during the Russian invasion of Ukraine affected operations in multiple sectors through global supply chain disruption, rising oil and gas prices, effect on the global banking system, decline in economic output and growth, rising global inflation and cost of living. The study also discovered that the invasion has also over four million Ukrainian migrants crossing borders into neighbouring countries, and many more were forced to relocate within Ukraine seeking safety and assistance. The study recommends that International organisations, regional organisations and sub-regions should shift humanitarian priorities to include basic human needs such as access to healthcare, food and other relief material, especially to refugees affected by the Russia-Ukraine war. This will help address some of the effects of the war.
