The Effectiveness of School- Based Intervention in Preventing Substance Abuse Among Adolescents: A Systematic Review
Abstract
This study systematically evaluates the effectiveness of school-based preventive interventions in reducing substance use among young people and adolescents. Drawing on a comprehensive review of existing literature, interventions are categorized into four themes: Social Competence, Social Influence, Knowledge-Focused, and Combined Approaches. Findings reveal that interventions emphasizing social competence demonstrate consistent positive impacts, particularly in reducing smoking and influencing substance-related behaviours. Similarly, interventions incorporating a combined approach, integrating multiple prevention strategies, show significant preventive effects on substance use behaviours among adolescents. In contrast, interventions solely focused on knowledge dissemination or social influence exhibit limited or mixed results. The study underscores the importance of interactive and skills-based interventions, emphasizing the need for comprehensive and multifaceted approaches in addressing substance use behaviours among young people. Recommendations for program planners include prioritizing peer interaction and facilitator training to enhance program effectiveness, while considering that longer program durations do not necessarily correlate with improved outcomes. Overall, the study provides valuable insights for policymakers and educators striving to develop effective school-based prevention programs to mitigate substance use among adolescents.
