Profiling Bioactive Components of Sclerocarya birrea Stem Bark using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS)

Abstract

Studies have shown that extracts from the stem bark and leaves of Sclerocarya birrea possess a catalogue of pharmacological activities, including analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and hypoglycaemic, antidiarrheal, antibacterial and insecticidal properties. The study was aimed to profile the bioactive components of S. birrea stem bark using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The result showed that the major functional groups present in the extract include phenolic, benzoic, methyl, carbonyl, and t-butyl functional groups. The chemical composition of S. birrea stem bark ethanol extract in shows the presence of N, N dimethylaline, Diisopropyl ethylamine, N-Methyl-4- piperidone, Phenol, 4-ethenyl-, acetate, Benzoylformic, Benzenecarboxylic acid, Tridecan-2-ol, Dibenzoyltartaric acid, Tetradecanoic acid, Benzoic, Isophthalic acid, n-Hexadecanoic acid, 1, 1 – dimethyl-ethylphenol, and 2-methylbutane toluene. It is concluded that the extract of S. birrea stem bark contains important bioactive components which should be utilized for formulation of drugs.
