Extent of Postharvest Losses of Cashew among Cashew Farmers in Imo State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study assessed extent of post-harvest losses of cashew among cashew farmers in Imo State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study examined cashew farmers knowledge level of post harvest losses in cashew production; examined the extent of postharvest losses of cashew by cashew farmers; ascertained the causes of postharvest losses among cashew farmers and examined the perceived effect of postharvest losses on cashew farmers. Multistage sampling procedure was used to select 72 cashew farmers for the study. Primary data was collected through the use of structured questionnaire. The result revealed that farmers had adequate knowledge of postharvest losses in cashew production. Cashew farmers identified causes of postharvest losses in cashew production majorly as inadequate processing facilities (100.0%) and microbial actions (100%). as poor market patronage that leads to too much storage of cashew (94.4%), careless handling of cashew during and after harvesting (94.4%), poor sorting and packaging (93.1%). Perceived effects of postharvest losses were loss of customers (x? =3.42), reduction in the quantity of cashew apple and nuts (x? =3.36), postharvest losses result to inconsistent and unpredictable incomes (x? =3.28) results to poor welfare of farmers (x? =3.28), and it leads of poor standard of living (x? =3.21). The study therefore recommends that cashew farmers should be should be helped by the extension agents to teach them appropriate post harvest management practices in order to reduce the effects of post harvest losses of cashew in the study area. .
