Social Work Intervention and Youth Restiveness in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State

Abstract

This study examined Social Work Intervention and Youth Restiveness in Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. Three specific research objectives and questions guided the study. The study adopted the Frustration-Aggression Theory. The survey design was adopted using questionnaire for data collection. In order to get the sample size, the study employed Taro Yamanes’ formula with a targeted population of 160 youths randomly drawn across Epie, Azikoro, Biseni and Fangbe in Yenagoa Local Government Area, and sample size of 114 were obtained after using the Taro Yamane’s formula. Therefore, out of the 114 questionnaires, after the distribution, 86 copies were retrieved and used for analysis. The findings of the study revealed that social works used the intervention strategies through collaboration, sensitization programme, dialogues, guidance and counseling in address the lingering youths crime and kidnapping in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa. The study therefore recommended that establishment of skills acquisition centres across different parts of the society can go a long way in helping the idle youths to shun all forms of youth restive activities, and make them self- dependence and reliance to have a better future. Government should collaborate with social workers, and non-governmental organizations to plan how youth restiveness would be totally eroded in Yenagoa and other parts of Bayelsa State.
