Agroforestry Benefits and Barriers: Insights from Global Evidence and Local Case Studies

Abstract

The Philippines is one of the many countries that are vulnerable to the impact of various environmental phenomena, specifically climate change. Various environmental issues such as declining forest cover, loss of biodiversity habitat, and among others are contributing to its vulnerability to the said phenomena. Furthermore, Agroforestry is a multiple land use system where trees, crops, and/or livestock were integrated within the same land area in a same time which provides numerous benefits such as fostering environmental sustainability and agricultural resiliency in an area which is prone to extreme weather conditions and climate variability. This paper employed a systematic review approach in order to examine the existing published literature on agroforestry. This article paper highlights the promising benefits of adopting agroforestry that were presented by various peer-reviewed articles. However, there are still farmers that are reluctant in integrating and adopting this system. This paper hereby concluded that integrating the agroforestry system in an agricultural landscape offers a variety of benefits that highly contributes in uplifting the farmer’s economic status and providing diversified ecosystem in the area.y
