The Communicative Impact of Tom and Jerry Animation in Development of Sex and Violence

Abstract

This study tends to discover the impact sex and violence has on children in Owerri North L.G.A, it goes further to find out the extent to which exposure to cartoon Animations influence children in their behavior towards sex and violence in. This study aimed at examining the communicative behavioural impact of Tom and Jerry cartoons on children’s sex and violent development. This study was anchored on the social responsibility theory. This study employed qualitative research design, which used in-depth interview. The study used a population of Owerri North parents in 7 main areas. The sample size of this study was 21 parents in Owerri North. The purposive sampling technique was used to select a sample of parents in 7 main areas in Owerri North. The instrument for data collection was the in-depth interview guide. Finding from the study showed that Tom and Jerry has both positive moral lessons and influential violent reinforcement in children’s behavioural development. The researcher concluded in the study that violent influence of cartoon on children is undeniable, hence, the need for parents/guardians to be more intentional about parenting and inculcating good values/morals into their children. It was recommended that Parents should censor and monitor what their children watch and listen to.
