Application of Digital Technology in Enhancing the Transparency of the Sustainable Fashion Supply Chain in Vietnam: Opportunities, Challenges, and Stakeholder Perceptions
Abstract
This study aims to deeply explore the opportunities, challenges, and perceptions of stakeholders regarding the application of digital technology to enhance transparency in the sustainable fashion supply chain in Vietnam. Employing a qualitative, multiple case study methodology, the study conducted 14 semi-structured interviews with senior managers from fashion brands, suppliers, and technology companies. The main findings reveal a distinct "perception-action gap": while businesses are highly aware of the strategic benefits of transparency in building trust and competitive advantage, practical implementation is hindered by inherent barriers related to finance, a lack of technological capability, the complexity of a fragmented supply chain, and a psychological resistance to change from traditional partners. Consequently, the study proposes important implications: businesses should adopt a phased roadmap, starting with simple technologies; policymakers need to play a facilitative role in establishing common platforms; and technology companies should develop flexible, low-cost solutions. The novelty of the study lies in providing a multidimensional, context-rich picture of this issue in Vietnam, illuminating the complex interplay between barriers and extending the understanding of technology adoption from the individual level to the supply chain ecosystem level—an under-researched area in the context of emerging economies.
