A Study of Optimal Sizing and Assessment of Standalone Photovoltaic Systems: Sustainable Energy Generation and Utilization in Nigeria
Abstract
This work shows the optimal sizing of components of the standalone PV system and assessment of the required quantity of the components in generating the needed energy (electricity) for sustainability. The sizing of the standalone PV system was done with components of the PV system and theresulting figures of sizing of the battery, inverter, solar panel, solar charge controller and cable sizing illustrated that 4 pieces of battery (lead-acid chemistry) with rating 12V 200AH, 1 piece 5KVA/48V inverter, 8 pieces of 590W monocrystalline solar panel worth 4720Wp, 1 piece of 100A MPPT solar charge controller and cable of 20m long generated energy of not less than 8444WH extracted from calculated expended (consumed) energy on a daily basis in the department of Electrical/Electronic (EE) of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Abia State, Nigeria. Many individuals and organizations, either governmental or nongovernmental, in Nigeria are yet to employ the reality of standalone PV system to curbing the issue of electricity in Nigeria. What people see as the most challenging to the solar PV system which is the weather conditions can be apprehended by using more solar panels and batteries than required to store energy for futuristic consumption. Solar PV system is really an invention that features to close the gap between the demands for electricity, the generation and the supplies. The department of Electrical/Electronic of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba,has used standalone PV system to generate energy up of 7456 WH, which is the daily energy consumption in the department from the hours of 9am to 5pm. However, this means that institutional communities and Nigeria demand for electricity are no more a challenge. On this note, it is convincing to say that standalone PV system is alternative energy for sustainable energy generation and utilization in Nigeria, especially in this period of high cost of petroleum fuels.
