Antibacterial Activity of Some Flouroquinolones against Selected Clinical Bacterial Isolates

Abstract

Fluoroquinolones are family of broad spectrum, systemic antibacterial agents that have been used widely as therapy of respiratory and urinary tract infections. The study was aimed to determine the antibacterial activity of some flouroquinolones against selected clinical bacterial isolates. Clinical samples of urine, sputum and high vaginal swab were collected from Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Sheikh Muhammad Jiddah Hospital and Waziri Shehu Gidado Hospital Kano. Identification of bacteria were based on standard microbiological techniques. Finding of the study showed 144 (51.4%) out of 280 clinical samples were positive with bacteria and urine has highest number of positive samples while ear swab has the least bacteria. The distribution of bacteria based on the age and sex of the patients attending hospitals indicated higher bacterial growth among subjects aged (21 – 40) with 61 (21.8%) and least among subjects aged (60 - above) with 21(7.5%). On the basis of gender, women have higher number of positive samples with 86 (30.7%) and men 52 (18.5%). Total of 6 bacteria were isolated namely; Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus species, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella species, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus species with Staphylococcus aureus as the most frequent isolate while Proteus has the least appearance. The Susceptibility pattern of bacterial isolates to flouroquinolones antibiotics showed high sensitivity to ciprofloxacin 127 (88.2%) and least to Levofloxacin with 76 (52.8%). Molecular identification of the isolates showed the presence of genes (gyrA) in 5 out of 6 isolates. It is concluded that gyrA gene is responsible for flouroquinolones resistance.
