Restoring Emotional Balance Through Compassion: A Review of Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT): Counsellors Perspective
Abstract
Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) has gained recognition as an innovative therapeutic approach aimed at restoring emotional balance by cultivating compassion in individuals struggling with shame, self-criticism, and trauma. This review explores CFT from the perspective of counsellors, highlighting its theoretical underpinnings, mechanisms of change, and clinical applications. Emphasizing the role of compassion in regulating the brain’s emotion systems threat, drive, and soothing CFT addresses limitations of traditional therapies, particularly for clients resistant to cognitive restructuring alone. Counsellors’ experiences suggest that CFT fosters emotional resilience and self-acceptance, although challenges such as client resistance and therapist competency remain. The paper concludes with recommendations for integrating CFT into counselling practice and areas for future research to enhance its efficacy and accessibility.
