Passive Daylighting Strategies for Visual Comfort in a Convention Center

Abstract

Venue lighting serves as the backbone for creating a captivating atmosphere, setting the tone, and accentuating the overall experience for the audience in a convention center. With their primary purpose being to provide a productive environment for different events, studies have repeatedly pointed to the unique strength of Daylighting for increasing happiness, color perception, productivity, performance and visual comfort. However, due to the diverse functions, large size and need to accommodate a wide range of events and attendees in these centers, conventional architectural daylighting design approaches may not adequately address these complexities, leading to suboptimal indoor environmental quality. This study explored the use of Passive daylighting strategies in a convention center to enhance visual comfort. It used Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) based on case studies to analyze the visual comfort of the spaces in these centers and how they were achieved. Based on the findings, it can be summarized that window design and placement, skylight and atrium, clerestory, light wall color, and shading devices offer impactful uniform illumination when optimized for convention centers. In conclusion, the consideration and incorporation of these passive daylighting strategies significantly optimized the way daylight enters the structure and has showcased its ability to improve visual comfort within interior spaces.
