Abstract

In regions with a mix of ethnic groups like Rivers State cultural centres play a vital role as hubs for fostering social interaction and mutual appreciation among communities both inside and beyond the state. River State, located in the heart of Nigeria’s southern Niger Delta, showcases a vibrant array of cultural practices rooted in the histories, beliefs, and traditions of its diverse inhabitants. To preserve these rich customs, cultural centres are indispensable. one often overlooked element in designing such centres is acoustics, which significantly shapes the auditory experience of visitors. This study delves into the impact of sound design within cultural facilities, examining its relevance across performance venues, exhibition zones, and communal areas. It highlights how thoughtful use of acoustic principles through architectural layout, material selection, soundproofing methods, and acoustic enhancements can transform a space into an immersive and resonant environment.by integrating both qualitative and quantitative approaches, including case studies and surveys, the research investigates sound-focused building materials and their role in cultural centre design. As technology continues to advance, innovative techniques for improving architectural acoustics are emerging. Leveraging these developments helps establish environments where soundscapes complement cultural displays, allowing visitors to fully engage with the richness of tradition woven throughout the space.
