Unlocking the Potential of Plant Waste: Phytochemical Profiling and Therapeutic Applications of Six Plant-Based Oils

Wumi Esther Adelegan, Victor I Ajie

Abstract

This study investigated the phytochemical analysis of oil extracted from six plant waste samples, namely Groundnut hull, Date seed, Apple seed, Plantain peel, Pear seed, and Tangerine seed. The research aimed to investigate the qualitative and quantitative phytochemical composition of the oil extracts and evaluate their potential therapeutic applications. The results revealed the presence of various bioactive compounds, including alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, cardiac glycosides, anthraquinones, and steroids. Data obtained were subjected to one-way Analysis of Variance and Duncan Multiple Range Test for multiple comparisons. The qualitative analysis showed different levels at which the bioactive compounds were present in the samples ranging between Present (+ve), abundantly present (++ve), absent (-ve). Likewise, the quantitative analysis showed significant variations in the content of the phytochemicals among the samples. This study highlights the potential of the oil from these plant waste samples as a source of valuable phytochemicals, providing a sustainable and efficient way to utilize plant-based resources.
