Exploratory Study on Pulp and Paper Making Potentials of Selected Agricultural Wastes

Abstract

This study investigated the pulp and paper making potentials of agro-wastes such as banana peduncles, cassava peels and sugarcane bagasse. Due to the high demand and usage of paper, the use of agro-wastes as raw materials became an advantage as a means of waste management and pollution control. The plant are useful for their economic importance but the waste can cause environmental pollution. Therefore, recycling such wastes to environment friendly materials is a necessity. The cellulose content and high lignin contained in most agricultural wastes disposal is a major problem in industries because of cellulose content and high lignin in contained in such wastes, thereby causing environmental problems, which are difficult to degrade. The agro-wastes (cassava peels, banana peduncles, and sugarcane bagasse) were sourced from a local farmer and pretreated before used in study. The study showed that, the cellulose content of cassava peels, banana peduncles and sugarcane bagasse were 42%, 33% and 34% respectively. hence these agricultural wastes can be used for paper and pulp production.
