Optimizing Passive Lighting Strategies for Energy-Efficiency in a Mixed-Use Development
Abstract
Buildings are made to satisfy and enhance the lives of their occupants. This can be achieved through the use of many factors in a mixed-use development, like the passive lighting strategies which are environmentally friendly and cost effective. Mixed-use facilities which combine commercial, residential, and other functional spaces in a single building, often faces challenges in balancing natural lighting and energy efficiency. Due to the substandard quality of power supply in Nigeria, the cost of operating this facility will be extravagant. Passive lighting strategies are essential in reducing energy consumption in mixed-use developments while enhancing occupant comfort and well-being. This paper explores passive design principles including building orientation, fenestration design, light shelves, and reflective surfaces, to maximize natural light penetration and energy efficiency in a mixed-use development. The paper employs a qualitative method approach, combining literature review, and case study analysis to develop a comprehensive understanding of the topic. The findings suggest that integrating passive design principles can significantly reduce energy demand, lower operational costs, and improve indoor ambient quality. Recommendations for improving energy efficiency in such developments are provided to support urban resilience and green building initiatives.
