Abstract

The natural world and the need to feel connected with the outdoor is expanding. The central element providing for this requirement is daylighting. It is not just about the vitamin D; it is more than that, the draw of nature’s beauty is instinctively embedded in our consciousness. Therefore, using daylighting is important because it gives us the connection to nature, making us feel a calm and comfortable. As more attention is given to sustainable designs, the incorporation of daylighting has also become an important aspect of contemporary design, as it helps to reduce energy consumption and enhances indoor comfort. This study aims to design a regional shopping mall that will serve Port Harcourt and its sub-region to achieve an eco- friendly and memorable retail experience. It examines the design requirement for a regional shopping mall, Identify the various types of shopping mall and their peculiar characteristics, it investigates the importance of daylighting effect towards energy reduction in shopping malls while demonstrating that it also improves customer satisfaction and identifies the various passive daylighting strategy such as clerestory windows, light shelves, atria, external shading devices, skylights, lay lights and reflective materials. The methodology used were case studies of successful regional malls, were chosen and analyzed. These helped to understand different design styles, layout, and features. This research also reveals the key design strategies for maximizing daylight penetration and circulation within shopping mall, providing a model for architects, planners, developers and policy makers in creating efficient and eco-friendly for commercial projects especially shopping mall that serves all users.
