Analysis of Utilization of Climate- Smart Agricultural Practices Among Maize Farmers in Imo State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study analyzed the utilization of climate-smart agricultural practices among maize farmers in Imo State, Nigeria. Specifically, ascertained maize farmers’ awareness of climate smart agricultural practices; assessed the level of utilization of climate smart agricultural practices among maize farmers and identified the challenges to the utilization of climate smart agricultural practices among maize farmers in Imo State. A multistage sampling procedure was used in the selection of 120 maize farmers. Primary data were collected using structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistical tools. The result shows that all the maize farmers were aware (100%) of CSA in Imo State. The results showed that maize farmers utilized the following climate smart practices; mulching (x? =3.1), application of wood ash (x? =3.2), use of animal droppings as manure (x? =3.9) among others. Poor access to modern CSA material like use of solar for irrigation (x? =3.0), poor access to improved varieties of crop that are resistant to climate variability (x? =2.8), Urbanization (x? =3.0), Lack of fund (x? =2.9) among others were the challenges hindering the utilization of climate smart practices in Imo State. The study concludes that there is low utilization of CSA practices among maize farmers in Imo State. The study therefore recommended that since maize farmers have limited access to modern climate smart practices like use of solar panel for electricity generation for irrigation of farms, use of greenhouse etc, the maize farmers should pull their resources together and purchase these items since they belonged to cooperative society. The extension personnel should also organize a sensitization campaign to farmers to intensify the use of CSA.
