Determinants of Pre-Eclampsia among Pregnant Women Visiting Health Facilities in Omoku Metropolis, Rivers State

Abstract

The study determined the factors that contribute to pre-eclampsia in pregnant women in Health Facilities in Omoku metropolis, Rivers State. The study was guided by four specific objectives, four research questions, and four null hypotheses were tested at a 0.05 level of significance. A conceptual, theoretical, and empirical review of relevant and related literature were done. A hospital-based retrospective cross-sectional survey was used as the design of the study. From January 2018 to August 2023, a five-year retrospective study of all pre-eclampsia cases treated in Omoku health facilities, Rivers state. The population for the study, comprised of 10874 registered pregnant women from various health facilities at the time of the study, a sample size of 341 was chosen using a simple random sampling technique. The results of the study showed that there was no significant relationship between previous history of hypertension and pre-eclampsia among pregnant women in Omoku Metropolis, the study found no significant relationship between previous history of diabetes history and Preeclampsia among pregnant women in Omoku metropolis, Rivers State.The study's findings demonstrated a significant relationship (p-value of 0.043) between maternal age and pre-eclampsia among antenatal mothers in Omoku metropolis, Rivers State, this study demonstrated that there was a significant relationship between regular antenatal visits and indication of preeclampsia among pregnant women visiting health facilities in Omoku Metropolis, Rivers State. It was suggested among others that pregnant women should ensure early booking and registration of antenatal services to enable them to have quality maternal and child healthcare so that maternal complications can be detected and managed, and that the government should provide social welfare services such as free healthcare service for women of childbearing age and pregnant women since health care services ar
