Strategies for Enhancing the Functionality of Metal Work Workshops in Technical and Vocational Education Institutions in Kaduna State Nigeria

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine strategies for enhancing the functionality of metalwork workshops in Technical and Vocational Education institutions in Nigeria. Three research questions were developed in relation to what the study sought to find out. A structured Questionnaire containing 28 items was developed and used for data collection while 3 experts were engaged to face validate the instrument. The reliability coefficient of the instrument was found to be 0.81 using Cronbach Alpha Coefficient. The questionnaire was used for collecting data from 100 respondents made of lecturers in TVE institutions in Kaduna Nigeria. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions. The study affirmed that the present status and level of functionality of metalwork workshops in TVE institutions cannot withstand the production of the desired manpower for the nation's workforce, also the study found that factors such as inadequate workshop facilities and lack of competent manpower among others inhibit the functionality of metalwork workshops. It was also discovered from the findings of the study that all the highlighted strategies are necessary for functionality of metalwork workshops. The study recommended among others that the school workshops, laboratories and the total environment where Vocational and Technical Education programme is given must be adequately equipped to reflect the actual working environment.
