Perceived Effect of Illegal Crude Oil Refining on Arable Crop Activities in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State

Abstract

The study examined the perceived effect of illegal crude oil refining on arable crop activities in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area, Rivers State, Nigeria. The specific objectives of the study were to: examine the extent to which illegal crude oil refining has influenced crop pre- planting operation; ascertain the extent to which illegal crude oil refining has influenced crop planting operation; ascertain the extent to which illegal crude oil refining has influenced crop harvesting operation; examine the extent to which illegal crude oil refining has influenced crop processing operation and examine the extent to which illegal crude oil refining has influenced crop marketing operation in the study area. Multi-stage sampling procedure was employed to select 150 arable crop farmers. Data were obtained through the use of structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. From the result, the respondents accepted the view that leaching (3.05), reduces some of the mineral elements in the soil (2.83) and reduces fertility of the soil (3.07) are the extent to which illegal crude oil refining influence pre-planting operations. Plants experiencing stunted growth (3.00), alters soil PH which affects nutrients availability and update by crops (2.99), and causes a loss of biodiversity (2.97), are the extent to which illegal crude oil refining influence planting operations. The study equally revealed a grand mean of 2.91 which also showed that illegal crude oil refining influenced crop processing operations in the study area. Finally, it was concluded that illegal crude oil refining has a noticeable and meaningful effect on pre-planting agricultural practices, significantly influences crop planting operations, has a considerable impact on crop harvesting operations, affects crop marketing operations in the study area but not statistically significant enough to conclude a clear impact of illegal crude
