Effect of Simulation Model of Instruction on Senior Secondary School Student’s Achievement in Algebra in Ebonyi North Education Zone, Ebonyi State

Abstract

The study investigated the effect of Simulation Model of Instruction on senior secondary school students’ achievement in algebra in Ebonyi North Education Zone of Ebonyi State. Two research questions and three hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted a quasi-experimental pre-test post-test non-equivalent control group design. The population of the study consisted of 4,893 (2,257 male and 2,636 female) Senior Secondary Two (SS II) mathematics students in the 70 secondary schools within the zone. A sample of 205 SS II students was drawn using purposive and random sampling techniques. Out of the sample, 121 students (51 male and 70 female) were assigned to the experimental group, while 84 students (44 male and 40 female) constituted the control group. The instrument for data collection was the Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT), which was validated by three experts. The reliability of the instrument was established using Kuder-Richardson Formula 20, yielding a coefficient of 0.68. The experimental group was taught using the Simulation Model of Instruction, while the control group was taught using the conventional lecture method. Data for the study were obtained by administering the instrument as a pre-test and post-test. The research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation, while the hypotheses were tested using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that the Simulation Model of Instruction significantly improved students’ achievement in algebra. The results also showed that the method was not gender-biased, as both male and female students benefited equally. It was recommended, among others, that mathematics teachers should adopt the Simulation Model of Instruction in the teaching of algebra to improve students’ academic achievement in mathematics.
