Enhancing Students’ Performance in English Language Grammar: Using the Projector for Teaching Vocabulary in Senior Secondary Schools

OKHIRIA, Esi Joy

Abstract

This study was aimed at enhancing students’ performance in English language grammar using the projector for teaching vocabulary in senior secondary schools in Bwari Area Council, Abuja. Two research questions and two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The population of the study was 12,992 senior secondary students who offer English language from nine Government Senior Secondary schools in Bwari. A sample of 115 students who offer English language were drawn from two Government Senior Secondary schools in Bwari. Simple random balloting was used to sample the two schools. Simple balloting was used to assign the experimental and control groups. A pre-test, post- test quasi experimental design was adopted for the study. Data was collected using a 20 item multiple choice English Language Grammar Performance Test (ELGPT). The instrument was validated by experts in Tests and Measurements to ensure the face and content validity. The reliability of the instrument was determined using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. The data collected were analysed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions, while t-test was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings from the study revealed that the students in the experimental group taught vocabulary using the projector performed better in English language grammar than those in the control group taught vocabulary without the projector. It is therefore recommended that projector be utilised for teaching vocabulary to support classroom instruction.
