Design as a Therapeutic Tool: Influencing Human Behaviour and Psychology within Juvenile Correctional Facilities
Abstract
This study delves into the substantial effects of architectural design on the behavioural and psychological results of detained adolescents, stating that the built environment might serve as a therapeutic tool within juvenile correctional facilities. Traditional carceral architecture, which is frequently characterized by harsh, sterile, and confining surroundings, has been demonstrated to intensify negative behaviours, increase stress, and obstruct rehabilitation attempts. This study proposes a paradigm change in which the architecture of a correctional facility actively aims to impact human psychology by instilling a sense of safety, dignity, and purpose. Drawing on environmental psychology and trauma-informed care principles, this paper investigates how specific design interventions, such as providing access to natural light and green spaces, using calming colour palettes, and creating flexible, non-institutional spaces, can reduce the psychological harm of incarceration. The study investigates the relationship between the intended environment and behavioural change, concluding that settings that foster privacy, autonomy, and good social contact can considerably reduce aggressiveness, lower recidivism rates, and enhance mental health. This study proposes a new model for a juvenile detention centre, providing a framework for building rehabilitative environments that promote human dignity and prepare young offenders for effective reintegration into society. The findings are useful for architects, lawmakers, and correctional administrators who want to improve juvenile justice by making it more humane and effective.
