Comparative Physicochemical Analysis of Ground Water Sources (Well & Borehole Water) in Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State
Abstract
Safe drinking water remains a challenge to public health issue in the midst of lots of borehole and well waters in our various communities; thus, these further justify the trend that the integrity of such a source of drinking water might not be guaranteed in the end. Access to safe drinking water is a human right; and it is one of the basic requirements for good health. Globally, ground water is the largest and most important source of potable water and being a vital source of drinking water for many communities worldwide, particularly in rural areas where access to treated water supply is limited, the quality of groundwater is however affected significantly by several factors, including geological and hydrological conditions, human activities, and infrastructure. Several studies have reported varying levels of physicochemical parameters in groundwater sources, highlighting the need for regular monitoring and assessment to ensure the safety and potability of the water. For this study, some of the potential sources of water contamination are geological properties, industrial and agricultural activities. These contaminants can be further categorized as microorganisms, inorganics, organics, radio nuclides, and disinfectants. The study assessed the physicochemical properties such temperature, Ph, turbidity, electrical conductivity, total dissolved solid (TDS) & total suspended solid (TSS) and heavy metals such as (cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, lead & zinc) in samples of underground water collected in the 10 wards of Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State. The results obtained showed that most temperature, pH & TSS values were significance at P>0.05 level, with high values of 28.24 ± 0.06oC (temperature), 6.88 ± 0.11 (pH), 9.18 ± 0.20 NTU, 52.29 ± 5.72 (conductivity), 215.44 ± 1.27 (TDS) mg/L &207.40 ± 23.90 mg/L (TSS) respectively.
