Bullying Victimization and Social Anxiety Disorder in Secondary Schools in Bayelsa State

Abstract

This study assessed the level of bullying victimization and social anxiety disorder in secondary schools in Bayelsa State. The study adopted correlational design and cross-sectional design was utilized. The study used non-proportionate stratified random sampling techniques and multi-stage cluster sampling techniques. From the total population, sample size of 1200 was determined using Cochran (1977) formula at degree of accuracy desired at 0.05. From the questionnaire distributed only 1101 copies were completed and retrieved. The instruments were validated and approach to authenticate the reliability, the outcome was Spearman-Brown equal length is 0.974 (97.40%) and Guttman Split-Half Coefficient (0.961). Two research questions and two hypotheses were raised which was tested with logistic regression analysis and KMO/Barllet’s test for the sampling adequacy for data appropriateness and sphericity respectively via SPSS 25 version. From the findings, bullying victimization affect social anxiety disorder. In conclusion, the apriori expectations are could be deduced that there is rusty outcome which revealed there is bully victimization cripples the academic system of student’s performance. This is in accord with the findings from the regression model used to analyze the hypotheses. Thus, the null hypotheses were rejected, while the alternate hypotheses were accepted. Based on the findings and conclusion, this study demonstrated very high rusty effect that have a long-term detriment to the student mental health. It could be recommended that program planners need to organize meetings, workshops with teachers to mitigate the causes of bullying victimization that have rusty halo effect on student performance in the academic system.
