Status and Adequacy of Workshop Facilities for Enhanced Teaching and Learning in Rivers State Technical Colleges
Abstract
The study is designed to determine the status and adequacy of workshop facilities for enhanced teaching and learning in Rivers State Technical Colleges. Two research purposes, two research questions and hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey design. The population of the study was all teachers in the four-state government owned technical colleges in Rives State. A cluster sampling technique was adopted and the sample size was 56 teachers. A structured questionnaire instrument was used to collect data for this study. The instrument was structured on four-point rating scale of Agree (A), Strongly agree (SA), Disagree (D) and strongly disagree (SD) with values of 4, 3, 2, and 1 respectively. The instrument was validated by two experts in Technical Education department, Federal College of Education (Technical) Omoku, Rivers State. Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient formula was used to determine the reliability of the instrument which yielded 0.65 reliability coefficient. The finding of the study revealed that, the store rooms in the school workshops are not of good sizes; the size of the school workshop is not sufficiently large enough to accommodate equipment and students; Workshops tools and equipment in technical schools are obsolete; inadequate for the number of students; and bad for sequence of operations in the workshop. It was recommended that Stakeholders of TVET programmes should ensure the status of workshops in the technical colleges are improved upon and made conducive enough for learning; tools and equipment necessary for learning in the workshop should be sufficiently provided for learning and that maintenance culture of the workshop should be cultivated by all concerned.
