Effects of Mastery Learning Strategy on Senior Secondary two Students’ Interest in Genetics in Jos North, Plateau State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of Mastery Learning Strategy (MLS) on senior secondary two Students’ interest in Genetics in Jos North Local Government, Plateau State, Nigeria. The study was Quasi-Experimental Non-Randomized Pre-test Post-test Control Group Design. The population comprised of 1,052, SS2 students. A sample of 57 SS2 biology Students from two co- educational senior secondary schools in their intact classes, were randomly assigned into experimental and control groups. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The experimental group was taught concepts of Genetics using mastery learning strategy, while the control group was taught the same concept using lecture method for eight weeks before exposing them to post-test treatment. The instrument for data collection was Genetic Interest Scale (GIS) with reliability index r = 0.91 established using Cronbach alpha. Data collected from the respondents were analyzed using Statistical package for Sciences (SPSS). Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The result revealed significant difference between the interest mean scores of students taught genetics using mastery learning strategy and those taught using lecture method F(1,54) =134.98, p < 0.05. Also, the result revealed no significant effect of gender on the interest of students taught genetics using mastery learning strategy F(1,24) =.795, p < 0.05. Based on the findings, it was concluded that MLS is an effective teaching strategy which Biology teachers should use to promote students’ interest. It was recommended that MLS should be encouraged in schools for improved students’ interest towards Genetics.
