Types of Glaucoma and Optic Disc Damage Relationship with Prevalence of Glaucoma in Ezinihitte LGA

Abstract

Glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness, results from progressive optic nerve damage. This study assessed the knowledge and prevalence of glaucoma in Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area (LGA), Imo State, Nigeria. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 650 adults aged 30+ years from five randomly selected autonomous communities. Screening involved visual acuity, tonometry, and ophthalmoscopy. Of the 650 participants, 52 (8.0%) tested positive for glaucoma. The study found a significant negative relationship between glaucoma knowledge and prevalence (P<0.05), and a significant association between age and glaucoma prevalence (P<0.05). These results highlight the need for ongoing awareness campaigns to improve early detection and reduce glaucoma-related blindness in the region.
