The Emotional and Mental Effects of Parental Remarriage on Adolescents: Real-Life Perspectives from Youth Counseling

Bashorun Latifat Olaide

Abstract

Parental remarriage presents a complex emotional experience for adolescents, often triggering feelings of confusion, detachment, and identity disruption (Lobaka 2025). While adults may view remarriage as a fresh start, adolescents are left to navigate a reshaped family dynamic without adequate emotional support or communication. This paper explores the emotional and mental effects of parental remarriage on adolescents, drawing from both psychological theories and real- life observation. Using a personal case study as a foundation, the paper examines the psychological challenges that arise when a child is expected to quickly adapt to a new parental figure, especially in the absence of emotional availability. The discussion is framed through Erikson's psychosocial, Bowlby's attachment, and Family Systems theories. Counseling strategies are presented to guide parents, counselors, and educators in supporting adolescents during this critical transition. Emphasis is placed on the importance of emotional safety, communication, and relationship-building to foster resilience and psychological well-being in adolescents.
