Udu Chukwudi Emeka, Chiwetalu, Uche Jenice, and Okpala Charles Chikwendu

Abstract

The integration of Digital Twin (DT) technology in Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) represents a transformative advancement in the pursuit of sustainable, efficient, and adaptive water management systems. The paper presents a comprehensive real-time optimization framework based on DTs to enhance the operational efficiency, energy consumption, process reliability, and compliance of WWTPs. By constructing a high-fidelity virtual replica of physical assets, processes, and sensors, the proposed framework will enable continuous data synchronization, predictive analytics, and scenario-based simulations. The framework leverages Internet of Things (IoT) devices for real-time data acquisition, machine learning algorithms for process modeling and anomaly detection, and optimization algorithms for decision support and control adjustments. The study demonstrated the practical implementation of the framework in a mid-scale WWTP, focusing on key components such as activated sludge processes, nutrient removal, and sludge handling. The results showed significant improvements in energy efficiency, effluent quality, and operational responsiveness, alongside reductions in chemical usage and downtime. Furthermore, the DT model provided a proactive platform for condition-based maintenance and regulatory compliance monitoring. The paper also addressed the challenges of integrating legacy systems, ensuring data integrity, and maintaining cybersecurity in digital infrastructures. This research underscores the potential of DTs as a central pillar of smart water infrastructure, by offering a scalable and adaptive approach for real-time process optimization. The findings provided a valuable reference for utilities, engineers, and policymakers that aims to transition toward intelligent, resilient, and environmentally responsible wastewater management practices.
