Blockchain and Cloud-Based Accounting in Selected Ministries in Nigeria

Abstract

This study investigates the adoption and impact of blockchain and cloud-based accounting technologies in selected Nigerian federal ministries. Despite ongoing reforms, public sector financial management in Nigeria continues to face challenges related to inefficiencies, fraud, and lack of transparency. Utilizing a mixed-method approach, data were collected through interviews with key personnel and analysis of internal reports from five federal ministries. Findings reveal that while awareness of blockchain and cloud technologies is increasing, actual implementation remains limited due to infrastructural, policy, and capacity-related challenges. However, pilot implementations in a few ministries demonstrated improved transaction tracking, real-time access to financial records, and reduction in manual errors. The study recommends increased investment in ICT infrastructure, comprehensive staff training, and the development of a clear national framework for integrating blockchain and cloud-based accounting systems in the public sector.
