Application of Artificial Intelligence in Wireless Communication Systems in Nigeria

Geku Diton, Okafor, Joyce Odu

Abstract

This study investigates the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Nigeria’s wireless communication systems, focusing on network optimisation, predictive maintenance, and security management. The overarching aim is to examine the extent of AI awareness and adoption in the sector, identify challenges hindering its integration, and propose context- specific solutions. The study is guided by three objectives: (i) to assess the current level of awareness and adoption of AI among major network providers, (ii) to evaluate the technical, economic, and regulatory challenges impeding adoption, and (iii) to develop a framework suited to Nigeria’s infrastructural and socio-economic realities. Findings reveal that while awareness of AI technologies is generally high, especially among MTN and Airtel, adoption remains low across all operators, with Glo and 9mobile reporting the weakest uptake. The barriers identified include poor infrastructure, high costs, inadequate skills, and weak governance structures. The study concludes that AI holds significant potential to enhance efficiency, reliability, and security in Nigeria’s telecom sector but its success depends on overcoming systemic challenges. Accordingly, the study recommends strengthening digital infrastructure, investing in skills development, creating supportive economic incentives, and establishing clear regulatory frameworks to encourage sustainable and inclusive AI adoption.
