Geothermal Energy Potentials of Southern Bida-Basin, Nigeria Estimated from Spectral Inversion of High-Resolution Aeromagnetic Data

Margaret Erimma Okoroafor, Prof Alexander Iheanyichukwu Opara

Abstract

This research work deals with ascertaining the geothermal potential of the Southern Bida basin, Nigeria using spectral inversion of High-Resolution Airborne Magnetic (HRAM) data covering an area located approximately between latitude 8o 00?N and 9 o 00?N and longitudes 6 o 30?E and 7 o 30?E, which corresponds to part of the Southern Bida Basin of north-central Nigeria. Radially power spectrum was applied to the aeromagnetic data of the study area divided into 9 spectral blocks and each block was analysed using the spectral inversion method to obtain depth to the top and centroid sources. The depth values were further used to evaluate the Curie-point depth (CPD), geothermal gradient and near-surface heat flow in the study area. The spectral inversion of the study area shows a Curie point depth range of 21.04-28.33Km, with average value of 24.4688Km, geothermal gradient range of 20.4-28.6oC km-1, with a mean value of 24.04oC km-1 and finally a heat flow range of 51.18-71.5 mWm-2, with a mean value of 60.1 mWm-2. This reveals that, the study area is not a volcanic region, might probably be a good source for geothermal and thereby further recommended for detailed geothermal exploration.
