Water Quality Assessment using Physico-Chemical Parameters in Kafin Gana Dam, Jigawa State

Abstract

This study assessed the physico-chemical parameters of water in Kafin Gana Dam, Jigawa State, Nigeria, to evaluate its quality and suitability for aquatic life and domestic use. Four sampling sites were selected based on anthropogenic activities, and samples were collected over a period of six months following standard procedures. Parameters measured included temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), turbidity, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and others. Results showed that temperature ranged from 29.0ºC at site D to 30.00ºC at site B. pH ranged from 6.71mg/L at site B to 7.1mg/L at site D. DO values varied between 6.31mg/L and 7.47mg/L, with the highest recorded at site C. TDS was highest (90.50mg/L) at site A and lowest (87.50mg/l) at site C, reflecting variations in sediment load and ionic content. Turbidity exceeded WHO and NESREA standards at all sites, indicating possible sediment disturbance from human activities. These variations highlight the influence of anthropogenic inputs on water quality. Findings from this study provide baseline data for monitoring and managing Kafin Gana Dam to sustain aquatic biodiversity and ensure safe water use.
